Lake of the Woods is a census-designated place (CDP) in Champaign County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,026 at the 2000 census. Lake of the Woods is considered to be part of the town of Mahomet, Illinois.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.5 km²), of which, 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²) of it is land and 0.47% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 3,026 people, 1,159 households, and 835 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,440.0 people per square mile (556.4/km²). There were 1,298 housing units at an average density of 617.7/sq mi (238.6/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.49% White, 0.79% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.20% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.76% of the population.

There were 1,159 households out of which 40.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% were married couples living together, 12.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.9% were non-families. 20.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 29.6% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 34.2% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 7.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 98.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $42,571, and the median income for a family was $44,315. Males had a median income of $32,061 versus $22,071 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $19,938. About 7.8% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.3% of those under age 18 and 3.5% of those age 65 or over.
