Change of era

*; 781): The new era name was created to mrk an event or series of events. The previous era ended and the new one commenced in "Hōki " 12, on the 1st day of the 1st month of 781. [Brown, p. 277.]

Events of the "Ten'ō" era

* "Ten'ō 1", on the 3rd day of the 12th month (天応元年, 781: In 11th year of the reign of Emperor Kōnin's reign (光仁天皇11年), he abdicated; and the succession (the "senso") was received by his son. [Titsingh, pp. 85-86; Brown, p. 277.] Shortly thereafter, Emperor Kammu is said to have acceded to the throne (‘‘sokui’’). [Titsingh, p. 86; Varley, p. 44. [A distinct act of "senso" is unrecognized prior to Emperor Tenji; and all sovereigns except Jitō, Yōzei, Go-Toba, and Fushimi have "senso" and "sokui" in the same year until the reign of Go-Murakami.] ]
