Pigadi, Elis

Pigadi (Greek, Modern: Πηγάδι), older forms:, -o -on(Greek: also with the a accented is a Greek settlement located about 72 km southwest of Patras, about 38 km north-northwest of Pyrgos, east of Andravida, 7 to 8 km from Tragano and Kyllini and southeast of Lechaina. Markopoulo is connected with the road linking Tragano and Borsi. The GR-9 (Patras - Pyrgos - Kyparissia is about 10 km to the west. Pigadi had a 2001 population of was 48 for the settlement. Pigadi is also in the municipal district and the municipality of Tragano. Its main industry is agriculture with some other services.

Population

Geography

Pigadi is situated between the Pineios valley and the plateau. The ravine is south of the village and the plateau is to the central and the northern parts and contains farmlands along with some forests, more farms mixed with forests lie to the south along with the Pineios River 3 km south which is also a boundary with Ancient Elis.

Information

Pigadi has approximately 5 km of paved roads and 15 km of gravel roads. Pigadi also has approximately 6 to 8 km of hydro lines as well as phone lines.

Houses were stone-built until the 1950s and did not surpass modern-style homes until the 1980s. It was linked with pavement in the 1980s. Most of the homes are abandoned today.

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, much of the population left for larger towns and cities especially the nearby Patras. The population remained steady since the mid to late 20th century.

Economy

Its main production are fruits including watermelon, melon, figs and vegetables including corn, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, cucumbers and others as well as dairy, livestock, olives and others. The majority of the population are based in other businesses as well as agriculture.

Panorama

Pigadi offers a view of the Chlemoutsi fortress, the valley, and mount Skollis and Erymanthos. It also offers views during clear days of the islands of Kefalonia and Zakynthos.

Other

Pigadi has a school, a church, and a square ("plateia"). Its nearest lyceum (middle school), a nearest school gymnasium (secondary school) are in Tragano, its nearest hospital is in Amaliada.
