John Blutarsky, or Bluto to his friends, is a fictional character from the
1978 comedy film "Animal House". Bluto was played byJohn Belushi .Biography
Bluto is a college student who likes to party, get drunk and cause trouble for the Omegas, a fraternity which foils the fraternity he's in, the Deltas. He is also the Sergeant-at-Arms of the Deltas and bestow each member's official Delta nickname, e.g., "Pinto," or "Flounder."
Bluto is involved in a number of wild antics during the course of the movie, including spying into a girls' dormitory, forcing a Delta pledge to shoot a horse in the Dean's office (the gun is filled with blanks, but the horse dies from fright), and even eating a golf ball. His most recognizable scenes in the movie are:
*When the Deltas decide to have a
toga party , he yells "Toga! Toga!",
*Smashing Steven Bishop's (Charming Guy with Guitar) guitar on the stairs "I gave my love a cherry..."
*Starting a food fight in the cafeteria by doing his impersonation of a zit.
*Drinking a whole bottle of whiskey in one gulp (in reality, it was full of tea)
*His "When the going gets tough..." speechThe last scene, shows Bluto abducting Mandy, who both eventually take off to
Washington D.C. and get married. According to themockumentary of the lives of the characters included on the Double Secret Probation edition DVD of Animal House, Bluto went on to become a Senator, and later President of the United States.Audience response
Although the Bluto character did not have much screen time, Bluto became one of the most memorable film characters of all time, portrayed as the ultimate party animal. The character also helped to boost Belushi's acting career and stardom to young fans.
