Yu-Gi-Oh! GX "Spirit Caller" (Spirit Summoner in the original Japanese version) is a video game developed by Konami for the Nintendo DS. It is based on the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime and manga, and loosely follows the story of GX series. Along with the game comes 3 bonus cards, following the tradition of modern Yu-Gi-Oh! video games. It is the first Yu-Gi-Oh! GX game to support Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

tory

The story starts off with the player on a ship, sailing to Duel Academy, with your friends Jaden Yuki and Syrus Truesdale. After ariving at the land, you visit your dorm for the first time. As you progress through the game, you start making new friends, but new rivals as well, your biggest being Chazz Princeton.

The story loosely follows the events Jaden goes through in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime, however it involves you doing them as opposed to Jaden. The game covers a big portion of the anime, from the beginning of the series until the Dark Zane arc. Because the game is based on the anime, most major characters and many minor characters are featured in the game. It also includes a lot of characters exclusive to "Spirit Caller"; they are featured as minor characters.

Gameplay

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX "Spirit Caller" is played the same way as all other Yu-Gi-Oh! games. You duel opponents with cards, either by summoning monsters to fight, using magic spells to assist your monsters, or by playing down traps. Each player has a total of 8000 "Life Points". A player's goal is to knock down their opponent's Life Points down to 0, which is done by attacking their opponent directly with their monsters. Decks are made up of 40-80 cards.

At the game's beginning, you choose your avatar. You are allowed to customize between a certain amount of hairstyles and face expressions. At last you can then name your character. You can also win different outfits and Duel Disks via repeated duels against certain characters.

Controls

Gameplay can be controlled with either the control pad or stylus alone, but can be used together to provide a better gaming experience. Controls are similar to that of Yu-Gi-Oh! Nightmare Troubadour.

The spirit factor

What makes this game different from other Yu-Gi-Oh! games are the in-game spirits. Each spirit is based on a card, such as Starboy, Soitsu, Hane-Hane, and Adhesive Explosive. There is a total of 16 spirits in all.

The player' first spirit is obtained near a well on the northern side of the island. After that, the player will be able to locate and duel spirits on both the northern and eastern sides, and one on the western side. As the player progresses through the game, the number of spirits available will increase.

Each spirit you obtain is on level 1, and can reach up to level 3. The player can level up a spirit by playing its card in duels. Each spirit has a certain ability that increases its power every time it levels up. For example, Batteryman D increases the player's chances of obtaining a card from someone after dueling them. Getting spirits are especially important, since getting a spirit is the only way to obtain the card of a spirit. At first the player obtains one copy of the card, but as the player's spirit levels up the cards of a spirit will increase from 1 to 3.

You are not the only one who has a spirit in the game, however. When dueling Jaden Yuki after obtaining your first spirit, the player will notice his Winged Kuriboh when dueling him. The player will see Chazz with his Yellow Ojama.

Glitches and goofs

There is a glitch in the game that allows you to buy multiple card packs at the card shop in the game for the price of one pack. There are also some Engrish quotes in the game, such as the e-mail you get from Alexis Rhodes early in the game and the message you receive for staying out until the dead of night in the game.

Characters

Characters from the anime and manga of "Yu-Gi-Oh! GX" make up all the major characters in "Spirit Caller". You can find a list of the GX main cast here.
