Frank Johnson (born 3 July 1932) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the VFL and Port Melbourne in the VFA.

Career

A ruckman, Johnson was 29 when he made his VFL debut for South Melbourne in 1960 and had immediate success by winning the Bob Skilton Medal. The following season he finished 4th in the Brownlow Medal count.

Johnson had previously been playing with Port Melbourne in the 1950s, winning a record 5 best and fairest awards in a side which made eight consecutive grand finals. He also won the J. J. Liston Trophy for his efforts during the 1952 season and twice earned All Australian selection. The first time was in the 1953 Adelaide Carnival where he was named in what was the inaugural All Australian team and he was selected as captain in the 1956 Perth Carnival team.

Hall of Fame

In 2007 he was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame after previously having been named as captain of the Port Melbourne Team of the Century. He also has a medal named after him, the Victorian Football League adopting the Frank Johnson Medal as their award for the best player in a State League match.
