Professor Emeritus R. Geraint Gruffydd (b.
June 9 ,1928 ), MA DPhil FBA is a scholar ofWelsh language and literature and atheologian . He is a graduate ofJesus College, Oxford (having commenced his studies there in 1948). * Chair of Welsh language and literature at theUniversity of Wales, Aberystwyth (1970-1979)
* Librarian of theNational Library of Wales (1980-1985)
* Director of theCentre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies (1985-1993)Since his academic retirement in 1993 he became President of the
International Congress of Celtic Studies until 2003 and was also Vice-President of University of Wales, Aberystwyth until recently. He has written books and chapters on a wide range on subjects from his treatment ofDafydd ap Gwilym , through toWilliam Williams Pantycelyn ’s work and forward in to 20th century writers such asSaunders Lewis .He is a
Calvinist Christian Fact|date=February 2007. He is a WelshNationalist Fact|date=February 2007 and is a supporter ofPlaid Cymru .Gruffydd was a friend of
