Henry Trengrouse

Henry Trengrouse

Henry Trengrouse (March 18, 1772–February 14, 1854) was an Cornish inventor. He was born in Helston, Cornwall, was educated at the Grammar School, and lived there all of his life, working as a builder and cabinet-maker.

Dismayed by great loss of life he had witnessed when the frigate HMS "Anson" was wrecked on the nearby Loe Bar, he developed a rocket-powered rescue apparatus, now known as the Breeches buoy, an example of which is on display at Helston Folk Museum [http://www.helstonmuseum.org.uk/home/] .

He is buried in the churchyard of St Michael's Church, Helston, and is commemorated in the naming of Trengrouse Way, a main thoroughfare in the town.
