Monsignor Giovanni Tonucci (bornDecember 4 ,1941 inFano , PU,Italy ) is aLatin Rite Italianarchbishop of theCatholic Church . He was recently named the Territorial Prelate of Loreto. 1971 till the end of1973 his diplomatic career brought him first toYaoundé ,Cameroon , then, from1974 to1976 he was inLondon ,United Kingdom . From July1976 he was back inRome , assigned to the Section for General Affairs of theHoly See Secretariat of State where he worked withMonsignor Agostino Casaroli , until being transferred, in April 1978, to the Section for the Relations with States under the guide of Msgr.Achille Silvestrini . At the end of the1984 he was assigned to theApostolic Nunciature inBelgrade , at that time still theSocialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia , where he worked until the summer of1987 before being transferred to the Nunicature to the United States inWashington, D.C. ,USA .On
October 21st 1989 Tonucci was appointedtitular Archbishop of Torcello andApostolic Nuncio toBolivia . He was consecrated as aBishop on6 January 1990 byPope John Paul II asprincipal consecrator , with principal co-consecrators Msgr.Giovanni Battista Re and Msgr.Miroslav Stefan Marusyn . He remained in Bolivia until9 March 1996 when he was named the Apostolic Nuncio toKenya and the Permant Observer of the Holy See to theUnited Nations Environment and Human Settlements Programs (UNEP /UN–HABITAT ).Since
October 16th 2004 he has been the Apostolic Nuncio (with residence in Stockholm) to Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway, where he succeed Msgr.Piero Biggio .On
October 18th 2007 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Prelate ofTerritorial Prelature of Loreto andPontifical Delegate for theShrine of theHoly House of Loreto .Family
