Tragedy struck the paper on August 2, 2007, when Editor Chauncey Bailey, appointed editor-in-chief of the five Post newspapers only two months before in June 2007, [4] was gunned down at 14th and Alice Streets while walking to the newspaper offices to meet the publisher, in what Oakland police described as "an assassination". [2] Witnesses said a single gunman wearing dark clothing and a ski mask [3] approached Bailey, shot twice and ran away. [2]
