Cholmondeley Children's Home a children's home in Governors Bay near Christchurch. Its mission is to provide quality short-term or emergency residential care for children, usually between the ages of 3–12 years, and support for their families. The home has an important role in helping troubled families, needing support for parents with problems that are disrupting or preventing the proper care of their children. The home is a registered Child and Family Support Service [1], and is managed by Family and Community Services (FACS) as part of the New Zealand Ministry of Social Development[2].
Location and History
The home is located in Governor's Bay at the head of Lyttelton Harbour. The home was founded in 1925 as a gift to the region of Canterbury by Hugh Heber Cholmondeley. Following damage from the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake, the historic house will be demolished. Board president Sir Kerry Burke has announced that plans for a new building are being worked on.[3]
