The Emergency Management Institute of the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency conducts courses for local and regional public agency emergency managers and interested members of the public, where the courses are intended to improve the level of national emergency responsiveness to all forms of man-made and natural disasters. It is based in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
The "independent study" program at EMI consists of free courses offered to United States citizens in Comprehensive Emergency Management techniques. [ [http://training.fema.gov/IS/ FEMA EMI Independent Study home] ] Course IS-1 is entitled "Emergency Manager: An Orientation to the Position" and provides background information on FEMA and the role of emergency managers in agency and volunteer organization coordination.
Professional development series
Part of the independent study program is the "professional development series" of courses that are designed for certification of emergency managers. The courses in this program include IS-139 (Exercise Design), IS-230 (Principles of Emergency Management), IS-235 (Emergency Planning), IS-240 (Leadership & Influence), IS-241 (Decision Making and Problem Solving), IS-242 (Effective Communication), and IS-244 (Developing and Managing Volunteers).
