Yevgraf Stepanovich Fyodorov, sometimes spelled Evgraf Stepanovich Fedorov ( _ru. Евгра́ф Степа́нович Фёдоров) (
December 22 ,1853 –May 21 ,1919 ), was aRussia nmathematician ,crystallographer , andmineralogist .Fyodorov was born in
Russia n city ofOrenburg into a family of engineers. The family later moved toSaint Petersburg .From the age of fifteen he was deeply interested in the theory of
polytope s which later became his main research interest.He was a distinguished graduate of
Gorny Institute , which he joined at the age of 26.In 1895, he became a professor of geology in Moscow Agricultural Institute (now
Timiryazev Academy ).Books
*His first book, "Basics of Polytopes", was finished in 1879 and published in 1885. It offers a classifification of
polytopes and derivesFyodorov polytopes , congruent polytopes that can completely fillspace .
*He wrote the classic "Symmetry of the polytope systems" in 1891 (approximate translation from Russian) which contained the first cataloging of the 230space groups , also independently classified by German mathematician Schönflies.ee also
