novelties.
History
Carnation brand milk products were first produced by the
Pacific Coast Condensed Milk Company inKent, Washington , founded byElbridge Amos Stuart [anonymous; [http://www.historylink.org/essays/output.cfm?file_id=1733 “Stuart, Elbridge A. (1856-1944)”] from [http://www.historylink.org/ HistoryLink.org.] ] in 1899. The company was renamed Carnation Evaporated Milk Company, and the town ofCarnation, Washington , was later named for the Carnation breeding and research farms near the town.In the 1950s, the Carnation brand achieved widespread exposure as sponsor of the "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show"
television program. As was permitted during that era, instead of cutting to filmed commercials, Burns, Allen and guests broke the "fourth wall " to describe or begin recipes that used Carnation products during the show. The red and white Carnation label was familiar in many American homes. With the widespread availability of home refrigeration and fresh milk, the demand for
evaporated milk dwindled, and the Carnation brand was acquired byNestlé as a minor product line in 1985.Products
