St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is a private, Roman Catholic high school in West Islip, New York. It is operated by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre.

Students with an ethnicity of White make up the largest proportion of the student demographic. Faculty

Faculty members at St. John’s are required to possess a Master’s Degree, have New York State Teacher Certification, and each is expected to continue on in the educational journey by participating in post-Master’s work, doctoral studies, conferences and workshops.Fact|date=June 2008 Sisters of St. Francis, Sisters of St. Dominic and lay women and men are also faculty members at St. Johns. Uniform

All students must wear the official school uniform appropriate for season, grade year, and gender to school. If a uniform is worn improperly, a uniform infraction or a detention will be issued. Skirts are worn by the female class body and must be worn at least 15 inches above the knee or mandatory detentions will be issued personally by Mr. Lace.Also introduced during the 2007-2008 school year were identification cards. All students and faculty must wear their ID card with an official lanyard around their neck every time they enter a building as a safety precaution. If a student forgets their ID cards three times, detention is issued.

Academics

The basic curriculum includes required courses in Religious Studies, English, Social Studies and Physical Education; Mathematics, Science, French Italian, or Spanish; Health, Art or Performing Arts and Computer Science. All students graduate with a New York State Advanced Regents diploma after successfully completing the Regents examinations.

A student receives a report card 4 times during the school year, as well as 4 Progress Reports. Final grades are determined by calculating 5% of the four quarterly grades and 20% of the Regents Exam, Midterm Exam, or Final Exam.

Three levels of classes are offered at St. Johns. Honors, Advanced Placement and regents courses. Also, St. John’s University courses are offered. Students placed the SJB Honors program can work to earn 30 college credits (one year of college) before graduating from St. John’s.

Music and arts

The five main performing instrumental groups are the Concert-Marching Band, Orchestra, Select Jazz Ensemble, Select Chamber Ensemble and Select Wind Ensemble. The five main performing choral groups are Chorus, Women's Chorale, MOVE (Men's Outstanding Vocal Ensemble), Danceworks, and The Company dance group.

The school Marching Band performs half-time shows and pep band music at all home and playoff football games. The band is also seen in annual St. Patrick's Day Parades in Mineola, Bay Shore, and New York City.

St. John's has a fully functional student art gallery for all student work to be displayed for the school.

St. John's has a notable musical-drama production program. The most recent school musical, "Crazy For You", was awarded the top production in New York State.Fact|date=June 2008 Some musical productions put on by SJB students and faculty include "Crazy For You", "Oliver", "Godspell", "Anything Goes", "Bye Bye Birdie", "Footloose", "Peter Pan", and "The Sound of Music".

Clubs and activities

St. Johns has many extracurricular activities, all are moderated by faculty members.

Athletics

The St. John’s athletic program starts with varsity competition. The men’s and women’s teams compete at regional and state levels in 18 sports. St. John the Baptist is a member of the Nassau-Suffolk Catholic High School Athletic Association (NSCHSAA)of New York.
