Although ostensibly the trail is located in Wicklow, it actually includes part of counties Dublin and Carlow.The trail is approximately Convert|132|km|mi|0 long and passes through the mountains and uplands of these counties, although it tends to avoid actual summits. The largest mountain on the trail is White Hill, at Convert|630|m|ft|0|abbr=on; it passes by many larger mountains, including
Djouce andLugnaquilla , although these are usually only accessible by side trails. The northern end of the trail is atMarlay Park inRathfarnham in southDublin city. The southern end of the trail is in the village ofClonegal inCounty Carlow . In its middle section the trail passes through theGlenmalure andGlendalough valleys, both known for their historic background.The trail was planned by
J. B. Malone in1981 ; a memorial to him is located on the trail nearLuggala .ee also
