George Douglas Stanley

George Douglas Stanley

Dr. George Douglas Stanley (born: March 19, 1876 Exeter, Ontario - died: February 22, 1954) was a politician and physician from Alberta, Canada.

Provincial politics

Dr. Stanley first ran for a seat to the Alberta legislature in the 1909 Alberta general election. He lost the two way contest by only a very tight 8 votes to Liberal candidate Louis Roberts. That election result was the closest in the province that year.

He would run again in the 1913 Alberta general election, Roberts did not choose to defend his seat and Stanley ended up winning this time by 38 votes to win his first term in office.

Stanley would run for a second term and retain his seat in the 1917 Alberta general election winning a more comfortable margin.

Federal politics

In 1930 he became the Conservative candidate in the federal riding of Calgary East. Stanley defeated incumbent Herbert Adshead in the 1930 Canadian federal election, he would only serve in the Canadian House of Commons for just one term before being defeated by John Landeryou from the Social Credit Party of Canada in the 1935 Canadian federal election.
