The Cidade do Rock (City of Rock), located in Barra da Tijuca, became internationally known as the stage of rock music mega festivals like Rock in Rio I and III in 1985 and 2001,respectively, holding crowds of up to 250,000 people in one night. For the 2007 Pan American Games, temporary stadiums for baseball and softball, with a capacity of 3,000 and 2,000 respectively, were erected on the site. The site received temporary facilities for baseball competitions, with a stadium and training fields; and softball competitions, with a stadium.
The original site of the Cidade do Rock will be incorporated into the site of the Olympic Village for the 2016 Summer Olympics. A new Cidade do Rock was constructed to the southeast of the nearby Riocentro exhibition center.
