Mu Alpha Theta National Log 1 Contest

Mu Alpha Theta National Log 1 Contest

The Mu Alpha Theta National Log 1 Contest is a free contest sponsored by Mu Alpha Theta, the national high school mathematics honor society. Although contest is free, participation is restricted to schools with active Mu Alpha Theta chapters, and specifically to students who are Mu Alpha Theta members or Associate members.

Rounds

The contest consists of 3 rounds in formats based on competitions which occur each year at the Mu Alpha Theta National Convention: An Individual Test, 3 Topics Tests and a Ciphering Test.
*First Round: An "individual test" of general mathematics knowledge, in which an individual has 30 minutes to answer 15 questions covering a range of topics and difficulties. The contestants have to solve problems without a calculator.
*Second Round: There are 3 topics from which the contestants can choose to take (either): Probability, Geometry, or Equations and Inequalities.
*Third Round: The Ciphering Test consists of 10 three-problem rounds of general open-answer problems, to be solved without using calculators. In each of the 10 rounds, contestants have to solve all 3 problems in only 3 minutes.

Awards

All participating schools will be entered in a random drawing for 20 blue Mu Alpha Theta t-shirts and 50 TI graphlinks. Plaques and certificates will be awarded to the top individuals in 3 divisions: Mu, Alpha, and Theta, and in each of the four Mu Alpha Theta regions. Top schools in each region will receive awards based on the sum of their 2 highest student scores in each of the 3 divisions.

Other information

*Before the tests, schools receive free testing materials including detailed solutions via by postal or electronic mail.
*On a test date, the school can administer the test once, at any time that is convenient. Each school must return the scored answer forms of all participating students postmarked by midnight of the Monday following each test.
*Results will be posted online at the Mu Alpha Theta website during the competition, listing top schools and students in each division and in each region. Students receiving perfect scores will be listed.
