Horace Taliaferro Ward (born
July 19 ,1927 ) was the first African American to challenge the racially discriminatory practices at theUniversity of Georgia (UGA) School of Law.Ward was born in
LaGrange, Georgia . He was a member of theGeorgia State Senate and the first African American ever to serve on the federal bench in Georgia when he was appointed by PresidentJimmy Carter to theUnited States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia .Ward is a member of
Alpha Phi Alpha , the first inter-collegiate Greek-letter organization established for African Americans.References
