exitno=4Hung Hom Station (紅磡站), formerly known as Kowloon Station (九龍站) is a station on the HK-MTR lines|East Rail in
Hong Kong . It is located inHung Hom ,Kowloon .This station was opened in
1974 because the old Kowloon station atTsim Sha Tsui was too small, had no room for expansion and was therefore demolished in the same year (although the clock tower still stands). This new Kowloon station, later renamed Hung Hom station, served as the terminus for East Rail until24 October 2004 , when KCR East Rail was extended toEast Tsim Sha Tsui Station at East Tsim Sha Tsui. The expanded part of the concourse in Hung Hom station was opened in 2001, making it the largest KCR station, before the opening of East Tsim Sha Tsui station. It now serves as an intermediate station on HK-MTR lines|East Rail, as well as the terminus of intercity services with destinations to major cities including
Beijing ,Shanghai ,Guangzhou , as well asZhaoqing ,Foshan ,Dongguan inGuangdong .Hung Hom Station is one of the three Hong Kong ports-of-entry on HK-MTR lines|East Rail, along with
Lo Wu Station andLok Ma Chau Station .Before the relocation of Kowloon terminus from Tsim Sha Tsui to Hung Hom in
1974 , a station named Hung Hom was located atChatham Road South , next to the then coastline ofHung Hom Bay and nearGun Club Hill Barracks .Hung Hom and its surrounding roads and areas still carry signage referring to the Hung Hom transport interchange as "Railway Terminus". Although East Tsim Sha Tsui is the current terminus, this will revert back to Hung Hom when the
Kowloon Southern Link opens in2009 , where the HK-MTR lines|East Rail will meet the HK-MTR lines|West Rail at Hung Hom (and East Tsim Sha Tsui will become a West Rail Line intermediate station).Since Hung Hom Station is located near the
Cross Harbour Tunnel , it serves as an important transport interchange for passengers heading to and fromHong Kong Island .Future development
The
Sha Tin to Central Link , in its various manifestations throughout the last thirty years, all consideredHung Hom as a strategic key. In the latest recommendations by the Legco, theEast Rail Line will be extended toHong Kong Island , forming a North-South corridor, whereas theWest Rail Line , theMa On Shan Line , and the yet-to-be-built East Kowloon Link, will be connected into an East-West Line. Hung Hom will serve as a cross-platform interchange station. The proposal negated the need to perform three-line interchanges, which would have required new underground platforms and escalator transfers.tation layout
