Typically served as a one ounce alcoholic bar shot, a Whinnegar is 4/5 whiskey, 1/5 pure white vinegar.

Origins

The brainchild of patrons of The Thirsty Moose in Carleton Place, Ontario, Canada, the Whinnegar was first conceived during a social occasion when one of the said patrons required a remedy for involuntary spasmodic contraction of the diaphragm, commonly referred to as "the hiccups". In a brilliant stroke of ingenuity and innovation, Carleton Place locals created a medicinal alcoholic saloon shot that mixed vinegar, long-known to cure hiccups when consumed in measured doses, with choice domestic or imported whiskey. This new libation produced an elixir that (allegedly) eliminated the hiccups while markedly inhibiting sobriety.

As therapeutic use of the Whinnegar grew, so did its reputation as a sophisticated spirit-based beverage. This has led to widespread recreational use. Today, it is known to be served, upon request, in bars throughout Ontario, most notably, in Carleton Place, Ottawa and Toronto.

The Whinnegar is expected to go International in August 2007 when the recipe is introduced to licensed establishments on the Las Vegas strip.
