USS Escambia (AO-80) was a
Escambia-class fleet oiler acquired by theU.S. Navy for use duringWorld War II . She had the dangerous but necessary task of providing fuel to vessels in combat and non-combat areas primarily in thePacific Ocean . For her valiant efforts, she received fivebattle stars during the war. "Escambia" was launched25 April 1943 byMarinship Corp.,Sausalito, California ; sponsored by Mrs. Joseph Cooper; and commissioned28 October 1943 , Lieutenant Commander J. M. Paulsson,USNR , in command.World War II Pacific Theatre operations
After a December 1943 voyage from the
U.S. West Coast toPearl Harbor with oil cargo, "Escambia" departedSan Francisco, California ,21 January 1944 forMajuro , arriving9 February . For the next month she fueled ships atRoi Namur andMajuro as theMarshall Islands were assaulted. From15 March to30 August , she sailed out ofEspiritu Santo , fueling the fast-carrier task force in their raids on thePalaus and during theHollandia operation.Supporting the invasion of the Philippines
"Escambia" arrived at Manus
14 September 1944 , and sailed out of this port torendezvous at sea to fuel the carriers as they launched the air strikes preliminary to the assault on thePhilippines . She sailed on toUlithi 25 October , and at this vast fleet anchorage, fueled the carriertask force s as they continued their operations in thePhilippines . After a voyage toEniwetok to reload oil, she sailed from Ulithi11 December for a west coast overhaul. The oiler returned to Ulithi18 April 1945 , and for the remainder of the war used this as her base as she fueled the carrier task forces supporting theOkinawa invasion, and raiding and bombarding the Japanese home islands. "Escambia" paid calls toOkinawa andWakayama Wan to fuel ships at anchor there until leavingTokyo astern, homeward bound,4 November .Transferred to the MSTS
She was decommissioned
20 February 1946 , and transferred to theMaritime Commission for disposal in June. Reacquired in January 1948, she performed no further commissioned service, and was transferred to theMilitary Sea Transportation Service 18 July 1950 .Transferred to the U.S. Army
She was acquired by the
U.S. Army in May 1966 and converted to a Mobile Army Emergency Power Plant assigned toVietnam service.Final decommissioning
She was transferred to the Vietnam Government and scrapped by them in August 1971.
