Mississippi State University (1963-68) as an assistant. He was an assistant coach atAuburn University (1968-73) before joiningGeorge Allen and theWashington Redskins staff (1973-76).Hilyer returned to Auburn from 1976-82, then joined the staff of the
Birmingham Stallions of theUnited States Football League (1982-85).In 1985, Hilyer became the strength and conditioning coach at UAB. Hilyer was also an assistant professor in the School of Medicine and an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Health Education and Physical Education.
Hilyer earned his B. S. in Physical Education and Biology from Stetson University. He has an M.S. in Educational Administration/Educational Psychology. He earned his M.P.H. in Health Promotion/Health Behavior from UAB.
In four seasons (1991-94) as Head Coach of sanctioned football at UAB, he coached the Blazers to a 27-12-2 record.
He was also Head Coach of UAB's Club Football teams in 1989 & 1990 with a record of 3-10.
