Alexander Montgomery Thackara (1848 - 1937), addressed as “Mont” in family correspondence, [Sherman-Thackara Collection: Correspondences 1869-1895. Villanova University] was born in
Philadelphia in 1848. He was graduated from theUnited States Naval Academy atAnnapolis in 1869. He served at sea in European and Far Eastern areas.He met Eleanor Sherman, the daughter of
William Tecumseh Sherman (Commanding General of theUnited States Army from 1869-1883), in 1879. They were married on May 5, 1880 at General Sherman’s home inWashington D. C. . Compass 1:1, March 2005. http://newsletter.library.villanova.edu/10.] The couple had four children: Alexander Montgomery (“Lex”) [The New York Times Obit refers to this son as "Rex" but family correspondence clearly list this person's nickname as "Lex" ] , William Tecumseh Sherman (“Sherman”), Elizabeth, and Eleanor. He “was appointed by President
William McKinley to serve as a U.S. Consul atLe Havre, France in 1897. He also served as Consul General inBerlin from 1905 to 1913, and PresidentWoodrow Wilson appointed him to be Consul General inParis in 1913,” [Polites.] where he served until 1924. Eleanor played a leading role in theRed Cross in Paris during the First World War. She died in Paris in 1915 and Alexander M. Thackara died in 1937 from bronchial pneumonia in theAmerican Hospital of Paris , located inNeuilly-sur-Seine, France , where he had lived for several years after his retirement. [“A.M.
