July 23 ,2007 ]Call centre training
In 2007 the school attracted some controversy regarding a training programme for
call centre operators. The programme was set up in conjunction with an energy company (EDF Energy ) which has a call centre in the area. For pupils, successful completion of the course provided half of the credit of aGCSE examination. Local adults were also able to participate. An assistant teacher claimed the programme was a successful one, providing students with "a taste of a real working environment" and helping to build their confidence. However a Sunderland representative of theNational Union of Teachers criticized the scheme as "a step too far".References
