He is team captain of the
Sheffield Tigers following the retirement of Sean Wilson at the end of 2005. His first full season as captain saw the Tigers finish second in the Premier League and a place in the Premier League play-off final, which was subsequently won by theKing's Lynn Stars .In 2004, Compton took over as captain of the Tiger's when Sean Wilson took an heavy fall ending his season. Compton's form led to a call up from Elite League side
Poole Pirates . This was also the year in which Compton became Premier League Riders Champion, passing the unbeatenSimon Stead in the final, when both riders fell on the last turn, giving both riders multiple injuries. The race was awarded and Compton managed to take his place on the rostrum as winner. Stead was unable to and taken to hospital.In 2006, Compton became full time captain, following the retirement of Sean Wilson. It was a fairly successful season for the Tiger's with the team winning five away meetings, allowing them to finish second in the Premier League. Compton tore ligaments in his shoulder while riding in Sweden in August, just before the Premier Trophy Final, which they consequently lost to King's Lynn.
He recovered in time to compete in the
Speedway Premier League Riders Championship in September, but fell heavily while in the tournament in his fourth heat. However, he returned to action fairly swiftly but was unable to stop his team from losing the Play Off Final to King's Lynn and again becoming runners up in the Premier League.In 2007, he was signed again by the
