Hereward House School is an "IAPS" preparatory school for boys aged 4 to 13, located in "Hampstead", "London" on Strathray Gardens, near to "Swiss Cottage" and the "Finchley Road". There are currently 171 on the roll. The Headmistress is Mrs L. Sampson. Three others complete the senior management team: Tom Burden (Deputy Head), Sue Kwok (Head of the Middle School) and Clare Belbin (Head of the Junior School).

Hereward House prepares boys for London day schools (chiefly "Westminster School", "St Paul's School (London)", "Highgate School", "City of London School" and "University College School") as well as "boarding schools": in 2008 boys left for "Eton College", "Harrow School", "Winchester College", "Radley School" and "Oundle School".

The "school" is split into three sections: The Junior School (Transition and Years 1 and 2), The Middle School (Years 3, 4 and 5) and The Senior School (Years 6, 7 and 8).

Each boy is also allocated to a house: "Angles", "Danes", "Normans" or "Saxons". As is cutomary in preparatory schools, lively and varied competition exists between the houses, including House "cricket", "football", "cross country running" and a "sports day". "Prefects" are elected by staff in September: few specific powers (or privileges) are given to the prefects, who are expected to lead by example and perform light policing duties.

The school educates 3 students who have started to run an environmental organisation called RHN Survey (Robin, Harry, Nicholas). They have raised £1,500.

A number of clubs are offered after school: cricket (or hockey), chess, Art, Science, Greek, snooker and table-tennis, Warhammer, Theatre Club (new in the summer of 2008), and Prep.

In 2008 the school produced one of the eight "Westminster School" Queen's Scholars; four scholarships were awarded to Hereward House boys in 2007:

1 academic scholar to "City of London School";

2 academic scholars to "Highgate School";

1 Art scholar to "Charterhouse School".

The Head of Sport at Hereward House is Christopher Hammond.

Sport is played at venues, away from the main school site at "Hampstead Heath" Extension on Tuesdays and Brondesbury Cricket Club on Fridays. The school has achieved good results against other schools in recent years. During the winter term, boys play football. In the spring term, boys play football and run cross country. In the summer term, boys play cricket and take part in athletics at the superb facilities at "Parliament Hill, London" Athletics track. In Years 2, 3 and 4, boys swim at the nearby Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre. Hockey is offered as an after-school club, with fixtures taking place in the spring term.

Football

The 2007/8 season will see Hereward House took part in the ISFA under-thirteen national tournament, the IAPS six-a-side tournament and the City of London six-a-side tournament for the first time. The school also plays friendlies against schools on a circuit broadly encompassing north London.

The school has a very successful record when sending boys to trials with representative teams. Hereward House sends boys to trials with North London Elite Football (more information can be found at www.elitefootball.co.uk) and the London FA team. Hereward House holds a phenomenal record of every boy that has attended a North London Elite trial being selected, something that is unprecedented in London. Through this work, boys have represented their country in national tournaments in "Denmark" (at the Danemark tournament) and "Sweden" (at the "Gothenburg" tournament) during the summer holidays.

During term time, a football club is run for students at Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre astroturf, on a Saturday morning, from 9:30-10:30.

In 2008, two boys from Hereward House were offered trials with "Liverpool F.C." and "Leyton Orient F.C.".

Cross Country

The Hereward House inter-school cross country event is run in March at Hampstead Heath Extension. Schools are invited from across London to compete for titles in under-eleven and under-thirteen races. The event is one of the largest inter-school competitions in London.

In 2008, the under-nine Cross Country team won both the Norfolk House and Lyndhurst House Cross Country competitions, making them the first undefeated team from Hereward House in twenty-seven years. The under-eleven team were also victorious in the Lyndhurst House competition and Hereward House were, subsequently, the overall winners.
