Straiton Pond Local Nature Reserve is situated close to the retail park. [Source: Midlothian Council [http://www.midlothian.gov.uk/Topic.aspx?TopicId=87] ] The area was designated as a Local Nature Reserve in 1991 after the old industrial land was reclaimed by nature and is now home to a variety of watery and woodland plants and animals.

Edinburgh's fifth park and ride is under construction opposite Straiton Retail Park, just off the A701. Due to open in the autumn of 2008 it will initally have spaces for 600 cars with buses taking commuters into Edinburgh.
