Ohio , listed in the National Register on1971-11-05 . The mound is a prehistoric earthwork likely built between 800 A.D. and 1200 A.D. by theFort Ancient culture. Alligator Mound is one of two known effigy mounds located in the state of Ohio; the other one beingSerpent Mound in Adams County, Ohio. The mound was thought to represent an alligator by early American archaeologists; however, alligators are not found in the State of Ohio. It is more likely that the effigy represents either an opossum, panther, or a salamander. Effigy mounds are more commonly found in the states of Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin.References
