Anne McGlone Burke (born February 3, 1944, in Chicago) is an Illinois Supreme Court Justice (First District) [ [http://www.state.il.us/court/SupremeCourt/Justices/Bio_Burke.asp Supreme Court of Illinois, "Justice Burke Bio"] , accessed 20 Sept. 2008. ] and the founder of the Special Olympics. Additionally, she has also chaired the lay National Review Board of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops which investigates accusations of clerical sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic church.

Biography

Burke grew up on Chicago's South Side, graduating from Maria High School. While raising her children, she returned to school and received a Bachelor's degree from DePaul University in 1976 and a law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1983.

She was admitted to the Federal Court, Northern District of Illinois, in 1983, the United States Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit in 1985, and certified for the Trial Bar, Federal District Court in 1987. In that same year, Illinois Governor James Thompson appointed her Judge to the Court of Claims and, in 1991, she was reappointed by Governor Jim Edgar. She was the first woman to serve on the Illinois Court of Claims.

In April 1994, she was appointed special counsel to the Governor for Child Welfare Services. In August 1995, she was appointed to the Appellate Court, First District. In 1996, she was elected to the Appellate Court, First District, for a full term.

She is married to Alderman Ed Burke from the 14th Ward, of the Chicago City Council and Chairman of the Committee on Finance. The Burkes have four children - Jennifer, Edward Jr., Emmett and Sarah - and one grandchild, Kelley Anne. They are also licensed and active foster parents. Ann Burke has 2 brothers, Jack and George McGlone, and one sister, the late Patricia Cleary.
