Previous to the school, the village had a
secondary modern school on "High Street". The comprehensive opened in 1973.The school was awarded specialist sports college status in 2000 and successfully achieved re-designation of this status in 2004. Currently, it is also the base for the
Leeds United Ladies football club.As well as this, in 2007, the school was one of only two schools in England to be awarded the
Investors in Pupils award, as well as many other acolades, including having a so-said 'Hot' Sixth form.An arson attack in June 2001 burnt down the gym. In March 2005, a new science block opened.
Academic performance
Students entering the school have achieved results at primary school which are above the national average. Just under 9% of students have been identified as having specific learning difficulties and/or disabilities, which is well below average. Very few students join or leave school at times other than in Year 7 or at the end of Year 11. The school gets above average results at GCSE and A level about tenth best in Leeds LEA.
