- Battle of Moku'ohai
The Battle of Mokuokinaohai, fought in 1782 on the northern part of the island of Hawaii, was a key battle in the early days of
Kamehameha I 's wars to unify theHawaiian Islands . It was fought primarily over the succession of King Kalaniokinaopuokinau, who had died the previous year. While Kalaniokinaopuokinau's son Kiwalaokinao inherited the kingdom, his nephew Kamehameha was given a prominent religious position, as well as the district of Waipiokinao. When a group of chiefs from the Kona district, including his brothers and uncles notably:Keawe-a-Heulu ,Kamanawa ,Kameeiamoku andKe'eaumoku Papaiahiahi . They offered Kamehameha the kingship instead of Kiwalaokinao, he accepted eagerly. After the battle, Kamehameha controlled the northern part of the Big Island, includingKona ,Kohala , andHamakua while Keawemauhili uncle of Kiwalaokinao controlled Hilo and Kau was give to Kiwalaokinaa's half-brother Keoua Kuahuula. It was during this battle that the renowned feather cloak of Kiwalao was captured by the Kamehameha the Great.References
