Agidel, or Aghidhel ( _ru. Агиде́ль; Bashkir: Ағиҙел; _tt. Агыйдел|Ağidel), is a town in the Republic of Bashkortostan,
Russia , located near the border toTatarstan .Overview
The name of the town is derived from the Bashkir name of the Belaya River:
Aghidhel River , atributary of theKama River , near the confluence of which the town is located. Agidel's geographical location is coord|55|54|N|53|56|E|. Population: 18,721 (2002 Census).Agidel was founded in 1980 as a settlement supporting the construction of the Bashkir
nuclear power plant . It was granted town status in 1991.As of 2005, the head of the town's administration is Valery Yakovlevich Fyodorov.
Since the
Chernobyl disaster, the people ofTatarstan have been strongly opposed to construction of a nuclear plant near the border of their republic.The popular Russian rock band
DDT (band) dedicated the song "White River" (Белая река), from their 1994 album "That is all" (Это всё), to the town of Agidel.External links
