Gaillon is a commune in the Eure department in northern France.

Timeline

* The origins of Gaillon probably go back to the Romans who had built a small fortress.
* 892: Rollo, a Viking chief, ravaged Gaillon and the region.
* 1192: Philippe Auguste, seized the castle in his battle with Richard the Lion Heart to regain Normandy.
* 1262: The castle was exchanged between Louis IX and Eudes Rigaud (Archbishop of Rouen).
* 1419: The city was put under siege by Thomas of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Clarence and his English army. It was subsequently retaken by the French, and then by the English.
* 1424: The Duke of Bedford ordered the demolition of all fortifications, sparing only the home of the archbishop.
* 1497-1509: Georges d'Amboise, Archbishop of Rouen and Minister of Louis XII, built a castle regarded as "one of the finest buildings in France."
* 1730: The road from Paris to Rouen was routed through the city.
* 1797: The castle was sold as national property.
* 1812: Castle Gaillon was turned into a prison and operated until 1905 with approximately 1500 inmates.
* 1840: The Lock was built at Notre-Dame-de-la-Garenne on the river Seine. The railway line from Paris - Rouen - Le Havre was started.
* 1866: The city began a colony Douaire for the agricultural rehabilitation for young offenders.
* 1899: The first hill climb for racing automobiles was begun, climbing through Santa Barbara.
* 7 November 1954: Pierre Mendes France, President of the Council of France, visited.
* 9 July 1958: General de Gaulle, President of the Republic, visited. Inaugurating the exhibition "Gardens of the castle."
* 18 October 1988: François Mitterrand, President of the Republic inaugurated the statue of Pierre Mendes France.
