synonyms = "Branchiosteus" Gill, 1861"Amblyceps" is a
genus ofcatfish es (order Siluriformes) of the familyAmblycipitidae . The genera "Amblyceps" and "Liobagrus" are sister group pair that is, in turn, sister to "
Xiurenbagrus ".Distribution and habitat
"Amblyceps" species are distributed throughout south and southeast
Asia . They typically inhabit fast flowing hill streams or fast-flowing stretches of larger rivers.cite journal|url=http://rmbr.nus.edu.sg/rbz/biblio/53/53rbz243-249.pdf|title="Amblyceps carinatum" a New Species of Hillstream Catfish from Myanmar (Telestei: Amblycipitidae)|first=Heok Hee|last=Ng|journal=The Raffles Bulletin of Zoology|year=2005|volume=53|issue=2|pages=243–249|format=PDF ] "Amblyceps" are mainly distributed inIndia and theMalay Peninsula .cite journal|title=A new species of amblycipitid catfish, "Xiurenbagrus gigas" (Teleostei: Siluriformes), from Guangxi, China|first=Yahui|last=Zhao|coauthors=Lan, Jiahu; Zhang, Chunguang|journal=Ichthyological Research|year=2004|volume=51|pages=228–232|doi=10.1007/s10228-004-0220-z] Three species are known fromMyanmar , "A. murraystuarti", "A. mucronatum", and "A. carinatum".Description
"Amblyceps" are easily distinguished by the presence of
pinnate processes along the median caudal-fin rays (although these processes may be poorly developed in some species), a prominent cup-like skin flap above the base of the pectoral spine, and theadipose fin largely separate from thecaudal fin . In most species the caudal fin is deeply forked; "A. apangi" and "A. murraystuarti" differ in having their caudal fin truncate. "Amblyceps" species may reach about 100millimetre s (3.94 in) SL.cite journal|title="Xiurenbagrus", a New Genus of Amblycipitid Catfishes (Teleostei: Siluriformes), and Phylogenetic Relationships among the Genera of Amblycipitidae|first=Xiaoping|last=Chen|coauthors=Lundberg, John G.|journal=Copeia |year=1995|issue=4|pages=780–800|doi=10.2307/1447027|volume=1995]pecies
