Emerson Middle School (Illinois)

Ralph Waldo Emerson Middle School is a middle school located in Niles, Illinois, USA. It is one of two middle schools serving the Park Ridge, Illinois/Niles, Illinois area. The school is part of the District 64 school district and serves students for grades 6-8. Emerson Middle School is named after the poet Ralph Waldo Emerson. The current principal is Dr. Vicki Mogil.

History

Emerson Middle School is the currently the newest educational facility within District 64. Prior to the current building, the site was home to Emerson Junior High, serving grades 7 and 8. After the original junior high was closed, all 7th and 8th grades students would attend Lincoln Junior High. After several years, in the late 1990s, overcrowding at Lincoln Jr. High forced District 64 to reopen Emerson as a functioning facility. It has been open since 1998, and on May 28, 2008 Emerson celebrated its 10th anniversary. The question of whether to modernize the building or build a new modern building was posed to the voters in a referendum. Voters subsequently approved a tax increase to build a new modern middle school at the site.

Curriculum

The academic classes, or 'core' classes include language arts, math, science, and social studies. In sixth grade reading is also a core class. Core classes are taught together by a 'team' of teachers working together. Sixth graders have three periods a day devoted to exploring the various aspects of Emerson; these are called "exploritories". At the end of grades 6 and 7 the students are allowed to pick elective classes for the next year. There is an advanced course called 'Channels of Challenge' for students who excel at reading or math. For those who need more help, the "STRIVE" program is available.

Clubs

There are many activities and clubs that are made every year in Emerson. There is the yearbook committee where students get to help put together and take pictures for the school yearbook. Also, many rock bands became more involved, the most advertised and currently most successful being The Break. The school has many different music classes.
