Robert Jared Carpenter was the vice president of the
Council of Republicans for Environmental Advocacy beginning in 2000. In2007 , he pleaded guilty to one count ofincome tax evasion . He and CREA presidentItalia Federici , who previously pleaded guilty on similar charges, had used CREA funds for personal use. He failed to file income tax statements for 2001 to 2003, during which time his accumulated income was $236,135. Carpenter, like Federici, was caught up in the FBI investigation of theJack Abramoff Indian lobbying scandal . He was sentenced to 45 days in a halfway house and four years probation. [cite news

At his sentencing hearing his defense attorney argued for a lesser sentence for being "a footnote in the Abramoff investigation."
