USS "Astute" (AM-148) was an built for the
U.S. Navy duringWorld War II . She was built to clear minefields in offshore waters, and served the Navy in thePacific Ocean before being given to theSoviets under theLend-lease program.She was laid down on
7 December 1942 atTampa, Florida , by theTampa Shipbuilding Co.; launched on23 February 1943 ; sponsored by Mrs. M. L. Haney; and commissioned on17 January 1944 .World War II Pacific Theatre operations
Following shakedown training, "Astute" transited the
Panama Canal and joined theU.S. Pacific Fleet . She proceeded up the Pacific coast and ultimately arrived inAlaska waters where she served during the latter part of 1944 and the first half of 1945 conducting patrol and escort duty.Transfer to the Soviet Navy
"Astute" was decommissioned at
Cold Bay, Alaska , on18 July 1945 and was transferred to theSoviet Union under the terms of thelend-lease program. "Astute" served in theSoviet Navy as "T-523". The Soviets never returned her to theUnited States Navy . Reclassified MSF-148 on7 February 1955 , she was carried on the United States Navy List until her name was stricken on1 January 1983 .
