Siren FM, sometimes known simply as Siren, is a community radio station based at the University of Lincoln in the United Kingdom. It broadcasts to the city of Lincoln on 107.3 FM and at its website, "Siren Online".

History

Siren FM began as a student radio station at the Hull campus in 1996, when the institute was known as the "University of Lincolnshire and Humberside". Along with most of the university over time, Siren moved to Lincoln in 1998. It has broadcast online for much of each academic year, and on FM with a Restricted Service Licence each year in April or May [ [http://www.lincoln.ac.uk/home/courses/media/undergraduate/media/success-media-prod8.htm Success Stories - BA (Hons) Media Production ] ] .

These broadcasts were used by the university as opportunities for its Media Production students to showcase their work and take their exams live on air [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/1333956.stm BBC News | EDUCATION | Public airing of students' exams ] ] , and has invited local schoolchildren to produce and present programmes [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/2985945.stm BBC NEWS | Education | Pupils, aged nine, to host radio shows ] ] .

The university was awarded its community radio licence from Ofcom in 2006 [ [http://www.ofcom.org.uk/media/news/2006/03/nr_20060316 Ofcom awards nine new community radio licences | Ofcom ] ] , and began test transmissions for the new station at midday on 14 July 2007. The new licence has meant the station is more involved with the community outside of the university since it began broadcasting programmes on 11 August 2007. The station fitted a new antenna with a co-linear stacked dipole aerial on 20th August 2008 to improve reception in the north of the city. Possibly the stations most popular broadcast is Wake up to the weekend presented by Tom Davies.
