Shining Sea Bikeway

The Shining Sea Bikeway is a rail trail connecting Woods Hole, MA to Falmouth, MA, in the north-east United States. The path runs for over three miles, including nearly a mile along Surf Drive Beach on Vineyard Sound.

The creation of the trail began in 1977, when Town of Falmouth purchased the rail line from the defunct Penn Central for $329,000. [ [http://www.falmouthmass.us/deppage.php?number=37 falmouthmass.us] ] In early 2007, legislation was approved to extend the trail northward an additional eight miles, terminating in the town of North Falmouth. Completion is expected in early 2009. [ [http://www.town.falmouth.ma.us/depart.php?depkey=bike/ town.falmouth.ma.us] ] Rail service south of North Falmouth ceased in 1989.
