- St George's Walk
St George's Walk is a shopping parade in
Croydon ,London that houses many independent stores. The area was built in the 60's and has become outdated and undesirable (similar to The Mall inBromley before re-development). It could be compared to a market, apart from the fact that the shops are inside units. The street is opposite theCroydon Clocktower arts facility and Croydon Grant's entertainment venue which features a Vue Cinema and Tiger Tiger nightclub. This shopping area is substantially less busy than its competitors in Croydon,
Centrale , theWhitgift Centre and even theSurrey Street Market opposite. This is mainly because the parade doesn't house any well-known names apart from a branch of struggling Madhouse, the chain of discount clothing in Britain.By
2011 the shopping area will have been torn down and replaced by the new Park Place shopping centre which spans from North End to Queen's Gardens. There has been little opposition to knocking down the 'depressing' architecture on display at the moment, but the owners of the shops are facing eviction and don't seem to have a place in the new shopping centre byMinerva plc who see the new development as a "highly desirable modern landscape".See also
