- Welsh rugby union system
The top level of competition in the Welsh rugby union system is the Celtic League which is a league of professional clubs from Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Wales currently has four clubs in the Celtic League.
Celtic League
This is a closed league with no promotion or relegation; teams are effectively franchises. The teams also compete in the
Heineken Cup , theEuropean Challenge Cup and theEDF Energy Cup .Welsh Premier Division
The
Welsh Premier Division is competed for by Wales' traditional club teams. Recently there have been talks about the potential founding of a regional rugby franchise in the north of Wales, starting with a semi-professional team in the Welsh Premier Division.Below the Welsh Premier Division, there is Division One and Division Two split geographically into an East and West league.
Division Three is split into four: East, South East, South West and West, while Division Four and Division Five are both split into five, East, South East, South West, West and North.
A new Division Six was added for the 2007-08 season split into Central, East, and West divisions, however teams will not be promoted to Division 5 from these leagues.
