Jan z Wielomowic Gawiński, born about 1622, died probably in 1684, was a Polish
baroque poet .Gawiński is counted into the classical
generation of Sarmatians – thegeneration ofJohn III Sobieski , though hisnobility is not certain. He descended likely from townWilamowice nearCracow . He studied in the branch ofJagellon University inBiała Podlaska . Next he was acourtier ofbishop Charles Ferdinand Vasa . He may has fought withCossacks . Finally he settled down inCracow and got married with Małgorzata Lajtner. There he worked in severaloffice s, for instance the steward ofsalt work s inWieliczka andBochnia . He was also the best friend ofWespazjan Kochowski – they have found the second wives for each another).He used to write much and well. The most famous are his
idyl s, taking pattern fromAnacreon ,Szymon Szymonowic and ancient Latinpoet s, gloryfing life in thevillage and published many times. Very interesting are also "Dworzanki albo Epigrammata polskie" ("Court ladies or Polish epigrams"). He has written a poem "Clipaeus christianitatis" ("The shield of Christianity") in praise ofJohn III Sobieski defeatingTurkey , a series ofepigram s "Nagrobki" ("Epitaphs"),Latin poem on thedeath ofKrzysztof Wilski "Planctus" ("Crying") andtranslation s of works ofMaciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski as well.
