Wespazjan (Vespasian) Kochowski (
coat of arms :Nieczuja ) (born in 1633 in Gaj inSandomierz Land , died onJune 6 ,1700 inKraków ) was one of the most notedhistorian s andpoet s ofPolish Baroque , the most typical representative of thephilosophy andliterature ofSarmatism .Kochowski was associated with
Małopolska during all his life. His parents were Jan (John), a middle-class nobleman ("szlachcic "), and Zofia (Sophie), née Janowski. He studied at theNowodworski College , inKraków . Next, during ten years, he fought withCossack s,Muscovy and Swedish (he took part, among others, in thebattle of Beresteczko ). In 1660 he came back to paternal Gaj, but he had to move to Goleniowy nearSzczekociny inKraków Land .His first publication was a
poem entitled "Kamień świadectwa wielkiego w Koronie Polskiej senatora niewinności" ("The Stone of Testimony of the Innocence of the Great Senator of Polish Kingdom") in the defence ofJerzy Sebastian Lubomirski . In 1668 he published his first volume, "Różaniec Najświętszej Panny Maryi" ("The Rosary of Holy Virgin Mary"), which considers each secrets ofrosary .During that time, Kochowski was involved in political life (regional
council s, stateparliament s, localoffice s), gaining large respect among the nobility. He was even the podżupnik (administrator) of hugesalt mine s inWieliczka nearKraków .In 1674 he published his first masterpiece — "
Niepróżnujące próżnowanie " ("Not idling idleness"). This is a collection of several hundreds verses, divided in four books oflyric s, one book ofepode s and two books ofepigram s. He showed the variety of topics, feelings, stylistic figures andversification forms. He expressed the care ofPolish-Lithuanian Commonwealth , praised its triumphs, criticised its weaknesses, encouraged compatriots to defence it; he glorified life in the country and his paternal region, thankedGod for looking for him and also joked at many ordinary situations in life.In 1681 Kochowski also wrote two religious poems: "Chrystus cierpiący" ("Suffering Christ"), which laments the Passion of
Salvator , and "Ogród panieński" ("Virgin's Garden"), which explains the titles ofOur Lady .During the
reign ofJohn III Sobieski he turned towardshistory . In 1683 he wrote "Annales Poloniae ab obitu Vladislai IV" ("TheAnnals ofPoland from theDeath ofLadislas IV "), commonly called "Klimaktery " ("Climacter s"). This is thehistory ofPolish-Lithuanian Commonwealth under kingsJohn II Casimir andMichał Korybut Wiśniowiecki . Kochowski had used theinformation from manywitness es,document s and his ownexperience s and he had done it so well. Thisbook is one of the main sources for the old Polishhistory .In 1683 Kochowski took part in the
battle of Vienna as "historiographus privilegiatus" (theprivilege dhistorian ); a position granted to him by kingJan III Sobieski , an admirer of his historian skills. Next year he published the officialrelation from that – "Commentarius belli adversus Turcas" ("Memoirs from thewar against Turks"). He also tried to make the national epos, but he managed to write only onecanto , edited as "Dzieło Boskie albo Pieśni Wiednia wybawionego" ("The Work of God or Songs of Liberated Vienna", also in 1684.The last, most original and interesting piece of Kochowski was "Trybut należyty wdzięczności wszystkiego dobrego Dawcy, Panu i Bogu albo Psalmodia polska za dobrodziejstwa Boskie dziękująca" ("The Appropriate
Gift ofGratefulness for the Giver of Everything Good,Lord andGod , or PolishPsalmody , Thanking for theGod 'sBenefits ") from 1695, usually called simply "Psalmodia polska " ("The Polish Psalmody"). It distinguishes itself, on one hand, by theBible stylization, and on the other hand, by the change of point of view fromHebrew toPole , fromJew toChristian , from ancient person to modern one. There are mixed 14 private and 22 publicpsalm s. It tells about theexpiation and theGod's mercy ,moderation ofgreed s and believing in theprovidence ("złota mierność" – "thegolden mean "), special role ofPoland in theworld ("antemurale christianitatis" – "thebulwark ofChristianity ") and the superiority of Polishpolitical system ("złota wolność" – "the goldenliberty "). "Psalmodia polska " is recognized as one of the mainmonument s of old Polishliterature and the bestsynthesis ofSarmatism .In 1658 Kochowski married Marianna (Marianne) Misiowska. They had a son, Hieronim Franciszek (Jerome Francis), as late as 1674. After the
death of Marianna in 1677 he married rich widow Magdalena (Madeline) Frezer. In 1696 she also died.He was the best
friend ofJan Gawiński , which was also a goodpoet . Hisfriend s were alsoStefan Bidziński (a well-knownsoldier ),Hieronim Komornicki (abbot ofŚwięty Krzyż ) andPakosław Lanckoroński (apolitician ).Kochowski was very appreciated in his times. He was also so popular in the last period of partitions and between the Wars. Last time he is more and more
