Piako was resurrected for the 2002 general election, replacing Karapiro.
Under boundary changes for the 2008 general election, Piako will cease to exist as an electorate. Its population centres will be distributed among the neighbouring seats of Hunua and Papakura. Officially, Piako will be replaced on paper by the seat of Waikato.
