- Cardinal laws
Cardinal laws ( _pl. Prawa kardynalne) were enacted during the
Repnin Sejm of 1767-1768 inWarsaw ,Poland . Officially, they were supposed to ensure the "Golden Freedom " of the Polish nobility. In fact, they were pushed through legislation which ensured that thepolitical system of the Commonwealth would be ineffective and easy to control by its foreign neighbours and thus they were guaranteed by the Russian EmpressCatherine the Great (and by 1775 also byPrussia andAustro-Hungary , with Russian forces - under the command of PrinceNicholas Repnin - present in Poland to ensure their passage. In particular, the "
liberum veto ",free election ,neminem captivabimus , rights to form the confederation androkosz —in other words, all the important old privileges of the nobility, which made the Commonwealthpolitical system (theGolden Liberty ) so ungovernable [http://books.google.com/books?ie=UTF-8&vid=ISBN0198221525&id=40KbWNve4XkC&pg=PA44&lpg=PA44&dq=repnin+polish+1768&sig=mdyC3nxT-IkUW3NnZS79Xw_G4KU] —were guaranteed as unalterable parts in the cardinal laws.
