Macherado

Macherado or Maherado, also Machairado and Mahairado (Greek, Modern: Μαχαιράδο, Katharevoussa: -ον "-on"), older form: -on, also with the second or third a accented is a village in the southern part of the island of Zakynthos. It is the seat of the municipality of Artemissi. Its 2001 population was 95 for the village.

Location and transportation

Machairado is located between 10 and 15 km west of the town of Zakynthos, north of Laganas and southeast of Volimes. Machairao are linked with the second road connecting the southern portion of Zakynthos and Volimes.

About Machairado

Macherado is situated on the central part of the island and is in the southernmost part of the Vrachiona mountains. Its area are hilly and contains a few forests. Farmlands covers the area, its main production are cattle, fruits and vegetables and several other crops.

History

Macherado was ruled by the Venetians until the Napolenic Wars when it was controlled and ruled by the French until the British invasion near the end, the Russians and the Ottoman Turks also ruled during the wars, though the Septinsular Republic was autonomous. Keri and the rest of the Ionian Islands formed a part of the United States of the Ionian Islands until 1864 which marked the end of the non-Greek rule, it finally ceded to Greece.

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, it was partially rebuilt, almost every building in the villages were completely destroyed in the 1953 Ionian Earthquake, afterwards, the village were rebuilt by the late-1950s and 1960 to rebuilt everything and at the time connected with asphalt. More pavement was accessed in the late 20th century. Electricity, radio and automobiles were introduced in the mid-20th century, television in the late-20th century and computer and internet at the turn of the millennium. Its population declined sharply between 1991 and 2001, and lost by nearly 85%.

Machairado offers a view of the Vrachiona mountains which lie to the east, the mountains to the east and the mainland including Etoloakarnania, the northwestern Peloponnese mostly Achaia and southern Kefalonia and Mount Ainos

Macherado has a school, a church, a restaurant, a tavern, a gas station and a square ("plateia"). Its nearest gymnasium (middle school), lyceum (secondary school) are in the area.
