Ruan, County Clare , he was educated locally and at St Flannan's College inEnnis . In 1879 he entered the Catholic Missionary College inDublin to study for the priesthood. He was ordained in 1886, aged 22. His first appointment was theSt Patrick's College, Goulburn inNew South Wales .
