It is the only species in the genus "Heimyscus".It it found in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon.Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical swamps.It is threatened by habitat loss.
